My Approach

Meeting you where you are.

Imagine having a space where you can speak openly, feel genuinely understood, and gain practical tools to navigate life’s challenges with greater confidence, resilience, and clarity.

For the past seven years, I have worked as a Canadian Certified Counsellor, supporting individuals and couples through anxiety, depression, stress, emotional overwhelm, relationship difficulties, life transitions, substance use concerns, and personal growth. I also have experience supporting neurodivergent clients, including those with ADHD, Autism, and AuDHD. I have had the privilege of walking alongside people from diverse backgrounds as they work toward meaningful change and a greater sense of well-being.

My approach is grounded in evidence-based practices, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), and Motivational Interviewing. While these models provide a strong foundation, I believe effective counselling begins with understanding the unique experiences, strengths, and goals that each person brings into the room.

For individuals struggling with substance use and addiction, I recognize that change is rarely a straight path. I work with people experiencing challenges related to alcohol and drug use, as well as behavioural addictions such as problematic video gaming, compulsive sexualized behaviour, and other patterns that may be impacting their relationships, emotional well-being, work, or daily functioning.

Whether someone is contemplating change, reducing their use or engagement, pursuing abstinence, or maintaining recovery, my role is not to tell them where they should be; it is to meet them where they are and support them in getting to where they want to be. Together, we explore personal goals, build motivation, strengthen coping strategies, and create a realistic plan that reflects each person’s values, readiness, and vision for their future.

My philosophy is centered around…

Authentic connection

Practical, evidence-based strategies

Meaningful, lasting progress

Together, we will explore the thoughts, emotions, and behaviours that may be keeping you stuck, and identify opportunities for growth. Using CBT, we can challenge unhelpful thinking patterns and build healthier perspectives. Through DBT, we can strengthen emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and relationship skills. EFFT helps foster understanding and connection within important relationships, while Motivational Interviewing supports you in uncovering your own strengths, values, and motivation for change.

My goal is not simply to help you cope, but to empower you with tools and insights that create lasting change beyond our sessions. Therapy should feel collaborative, purposeful, and relevant to your everyday life. You deserve to see progress, not only in how you feel, but in how you live, connect, and move toward the future you want.

Growth happens when people feel safe enough to be honest, supported enough to take risks, and empowered enough to take action. Every step forward matters.

I’m Darren Dyal, and I would be honoured to support you on your journey toward greater balance, resilience, recovery, and emotional well-being.
